What Does This SBCSA Offer?

Boat Building Classes

Introduction
The SBCSA’s boat building class began with a few members getting together over the winter months to build more sailing prams for our summer sail training programs. The growing interest to learn how to build other boats led the SBCSA to offer a more formal winter boat building class for area residents. Proceeds from the raffle or sale of the small wooden boats constructed by each class are used to support the summer youth and adult sail training programs.
Construction methods that have been used in these classes include stitch and glue, strip planking, and glued lapstrake. Building techniques include lofting, layout, and mold set-up. Skills such as epoxy bonding and filleting, sheathing with fiberglass, as well as how to get the perfect paint job are also taught.
Classes are open to adult members of the SBCSA. No prior boat building knowledge is required. Basic woodworking skills are helpful but not necessary. For more information, please call or email the SBCSA.
